AVGAS EXPECTED TO BREAK $5.00 PER GALLON by mid summer. That is the word relayed to us from LI Jet Center via Tony Monaco. Prices are already more than 50 cents above the bench mark we used to set our current fee structure. Unless there is a drastic drop in prices, expect an increase after the next board meeting.

At the April meeting, thanks to Jeff Macarthur, we had a guest speaker. Vinnie Nasta of Northeast Airpark, (www.northeastairpark.com) located at Brookhaven Airport, spoke about earning a tail wheel endorsement. The benefits associated with the rating and the differences between tail wheel and tricycle gear airplanes. (Other than the obvious) Vinnie went on to explain what is involved in advanced unusual attitude and aerobatic training. If you think you might be interested, contact Jeff. He is trying to get a group together. There are no minimum or maximum number of hours required. Just whatever you would be comfortable with. We were all impressed with Vinnie and we’re also indebted to Jeff for making the arrangements……Thanks Jeff

The first plane wash of the year is scheduled for Monday, May 16th from 5-7 PM. Barbecue to follow. Hope to see you all there.

I received a call about two weeks ago from Don Hayn. Don informed me that while on approach to ISP, the landing gear failed to extend on 6PN. He very quickly added that he and the airplane were fine. Don went on to tell me that he performed all the system checks that have been drilled into him through numerous “GACE ANNUALS”. He then ran his check list and pumped the gear down manually. (Don can tell you exactly how many strokes it took to get it down) The landing was then, uneventful.  Don did a fine job. But, we would expect no less from any of our pilots.

Two things come to mind from this. One, the importance of our GACE annual. The second, is the importance of a thorough run up. I know that the gear problem couldn’t have been detected during a run up, but, the pilot that flew the plane previously, experienced no problem. The same can happen with all the other systems in the airplane. Don’t try to do a run up from memory. Use a check list.  And, don’t forget to complete your annual.

I finally found one of the pictures I was looking for. This is me by 6PN at Henry County Airport, in Napoleon, Ohio, on October 27, 1985, just before Carl Echols and I flew it to ISP. We flew USAir into Toledo that morning (me, Carl, Charlie Lloyd and Ernie Neves) to pick up 6PN and 28E. Ray Heyde, the guy we bought them from, flew 6PN into Toledo and picked Carl and me up, checking me out (he was a CFI) in the airplane on the way back to Henry County, since I was the Chief Flight Instructor at the time and had to check all the other Instructors out. We then flew back to Toledo to pick up Charlie and Ernie. After checking the planes over and taking care of the paperwork we took off for ISP. Carl and I filed IFR and flew at 9000 feet. At that time the DME in 6PN was working and we had a ground speed readout at one point in the flight of 213 kts! I took a picture of it, and also one of Charlie and Ernie departing, but I still can't find them. Charlie and Ernie also filed IFR, but had a radio problem on the way and had to land somewhere in Pennsylvania to get it fixed. This year will be the 20th anniversary for 6PN and 28E in GACE.

Secretary’s Corner                                Rich Raine

Does anyone remember our former GACE member Fred Wolf?  He retired to Boulder, Colorado.  He has continued to pursue his love of flying.  One of the things we, as pilots, sometimes wish for is the ownership of an aircraft.  This was one of Fred’s secret goals.  In Boulder, he spent much of his time attempting to form a partnership, by bringing together approximately 5 or 6 pilots to form a group to purchase a new Cirrus SR‑22.  In the final hour after having one guy after the other bail out on the idea, he went ahead and entered an order for new Cirrus, N825FW.  Got it?  825 (his birthday) FW (Fred Wolf)

Sooner or later Fred will have his new aircraft in the New York area as he normally spends his summers in Vermont.  With a hot speedy airplane like the Cirrus, it will not be hard to talk him into coming down to Long Island to show off his new possession.  It will be fun to talk with Fred about all the gadgets his airplane incorporates.
