The New Year Begins We
started the New Year with an astonishingly large group meeting. The first meeting at the clubhouse was
packed to the brim with aviation enthusiasts. What could be the force that brought these hearty souls out
from their warm homes on a brutally cold night? Look at those happy faces!
What’s going on here? After
our president, Al Klug, gave us an overview of what is current at the
club, we had time to share flying experiences and check out the new Internet
connection. Come on out to the next
meeting so we can have your input for the benefit of the club. The
Left Seat Al Klug As you enter the clubhouse, you should start
to notice a few changes. John Costello has been spackling and
touching up the paint on the walls. Mark Goodman, with John’s
help has been straightening out the wires to the computers and checking out club
equipment for the safety factors and usefulness. John Vahey, Doug
Weston and Rich Raine have gotten the DSL system up and running
and connected to our computers. We would like to re-grout the bathroom and
change out some of the ceiling tiles in the office and rest room and would
appreciate any help that members could give. If you are willing to work then
plan on coming out to the airport on February 15th. Also, as soon as the
weather permits, we will need some help outdoors to repaint the guide lines for
the airplane parking and some of the tie down ropes need replacing. The
1st meeting of the year was held Jan. 27th and the temperature outside was
around 10°.
The turn out was great to hear John Vahey speak about Carbon Monoxide
poisoning. John made a fine presentation and there was quite a bit of
interaction from the members. One
of the problems associated with monoxide poisoning and also with turbulence is nausea. Paul Pelech suggested keeping a garbage bag
in the airplanes because they are easier to hit than a sick-sack. Good idea.
You’ll find them in each plane in the pouch next to the front passengers
legs. Also,
this month, I found out that the bottled water that we have been enjoying has
been supplied by Bill Rudock at no cost to the club. THANKS BILL. For
February, John Vahey has agreed to speak one more time. His employer recently
sent him to school in New London for training on the proper technique for
“ditching” an aircraft. This is a subject that most of us probably don't give
much consideration to. But, because we live on an island and must cross water
to get to most of our destinations and also, most of our training is done
over or in close proximity to water, this is a great topic for discussion. |

The
Left Seat (cont.) Al Klug John
will make this presentation at the general meeting on February 24th at 7:00
PM. Hope to see you all there. Here’s
a couple of last minute thoughts. We recently went to Block Island for
breakfast. A sign in the lobby advises that as of December 1st 2002, the
landing fee has been increased to $10.
And, I took a friend up to Mountain Meadow (22B) last week and the
food was as good as ever. You can still park real close to the restaurant,
too. Secretary’s
Corner Rich Raine I’m
continuing to put as much of the information that may interest you on the
web. These pictures are hard to
reproduce and see on the printed page.
If you can go to the web page at www.egace.com
you will be able to see the pictures much better. We may come to the day where we can all read the newsletter
online and save the postage for the benefit of the club. Soon
we will have a way to see the aircraft sitting on the flight line waiting for
you to fly by clicking on the web.
This will happen next month. (If Doug and I can get this figured out) I
would only ask that each of you let me know anything you might feel would
make this club better than it already is.
I can be most easily be reached at my email address – [email protected] Closing Notes The
club would appreciate the loan of a larger monitor for our computer at the
clubhouse. Not that any of us have
any problem with reading, as we all have our FAA physicals. Actually, if you have an old computer at
home you aren’t using and might like to loan it to the club, we could add
more access to the internet. We will
mark it with your name as a loan, so if your friend needs it you can recover
it. If it has speed we can load
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 on it and use it to practice IFR approaches. Meetings The
Board of Directors meetings are on the second Monday of the month at
7:00PM. All members are welcome;
however, please check with the president first in order to get on the agenda. General Membership meetings are the fourth
Monday of the month at 7:00PM. This month’s meeting
is on Monday, February 24th.
John
Vahey is going to talk about ditching from his New London training. For guys flying from Long Island to other
islands, this should have real interest. |
