GACE Fly In Rob Terano We gathered at the clubhouse early Saturday morning under
a high overcast with good visibilities.
A quick check of the weather before leaving my house told me that we
might be changing our intended destination Barnes Municipal. 100 overcast
with ¼ mile visibilities. After some DUAT browsing, it was concluded that the way
to our breakfast would be east this morning.
Al Klug recommended a good restaurant at Martha’s Vineyard. Frank O’Lear and Mike Stein
were the first to depart in 739SF, followed by Al Klug and John
Koch in 5928E. Vincent
Castillo and me followed shortly after in N2112K. It was a great morning, smooth as glass. The Archer held steady with little input
from me. Making about 125 knots over
the ground we quickly took the lead.
As we passed Fishers Island I could see that a pop-up IFR clearance to
the field would be a good idea.
1100-1700 broken. Providence
approach was more than accommodating giving me direct to MVY, 5000 feet. Cape
Approach vectored us to final asked kindly for maximum speed due to having 6
other planes behind me. At 120 knots
and out of the clouds at 1100 feet it was a quick and easy approach. After an
uneventful landing, we awaited the arrival of the Skyhawks. The restaurant was really nice and the food was great. We
all enjoyed about an hour of hanger flying and BS’n. That’s what these things are all
about. For myself I found that it’s
great way to get know my fellow club members. So far we have had 3 outings. Each time I either met someone
for the first time or learned something new about someone in the club. I am pleased to see that the response has been
overwhelmingly positive towards the club fly-out idea. I am going to try to put together one trip
a month. Hopefully we can a couple
in during the holiday season. I
strongly encourage you to try and one these events. It’s good flying, camaraderie and a lot of fun. Till next time…..Safe Flying The Left Seat Al Klug The last plane wash of the year took place on October
10th which was a Saturday. Tony Monaco, John Blosser, Jim Dexter &
Dale Mammina, Bernie Davidson, Chuck & Michael Calabrese, John Koch,
James, Justin & Drew Weisberg, Dan Bednartz, John, Delia & Ryan
Vahey, Joe & Jonathan Leonard, John Costello, Mark Goodman, Tom Klemenko,
Joe Fontana, Roy, Sue, Peter & Sarah Mathews and myself made sure the
fleet was clean and had a protective coat of wax to carry it through the
winter. Afterwards, Mark Goodman made sure we all had plenty of
barbecued burgers and franks. And, there was plenty of hangar talk. Thanks to
all those attending. On October 18th the club had another flyout and Rob
Terano will report on that elsewhere in this issue. The flyouts that Rob
has been organizing have been quite successful and he will continue them in
the future. At the general meeting on October 27th, James Weisberg
spoke to the group about “Continuous Quality Improvement”. This is a term
being used in businesses and boardrooms and James adapted it to aviation. Slides,
handouts and lecture. Considering the weather, the standing room only crowd
was quite impressive, as was the presentation. Thanks James. |

The handbooks in the a/c were in need of repair due to their
age. Thanks to John Blosser, they are in new binders and the pages
have been repaired. I saw John working on them and it appeared to be quite a
tedious job. Also, 9SF went in for corrosion abatement the last week of
October and 6PN will be next. Thanks to a letter writing campaign by Mark Goodman
to the Senco Company, the club has received 4 carbon monoxide detectors at no
out of pocket expense. (Total retail value over $300) John Costello is
in the process of installing these detectors in the planes. Mark & John,
thank you both. At the November meeting, I will appoint a special
committee to figure out what our options are in regards to updating the
fleet. Obviously, the a/c are getting old and it would be in our best
interest to start looking towards new or newer planes. If you would be
interested in serving on this committee, please let me know. (At the meeting,
e-mail or phone) This committee will be expected to bring its findings to the
board in January. N2112K’s final payment will be in January and we should
then be able to start banking more money. As you know, we started a dedicated
fund at the beginning of the year for “new or newer airplanes”.December 19th
is the date for this years Holiday Party. 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at Timber
Point. Price should be the same as last year. One of our members has offered
his service as a DJ so there is a good possibility we will have music this
year. (Pending approval of Timber Point Management) Included with your bill and newsletter this month, will
be a ballot. I have directed the secretary to cast one vote for each officer
that is running unopposed. The only contested seat will be for President.
Alan Klug, (that’s me) and Mark Hervan. Ten months have passed since I became President of this
great club. Many changes have been made, mostly by you members who
volunteered to do things. Some when requested and some self-initiative. A
look around the office speaks volumes. We recovered money and equipment that
had been sitting idle in Hartford for 2 years. Surplus avionics that we would
never use again were sold on e-bay. Plane washes were held on weekday
evenings and had great family attendance during the summer months with
schools closed. This also meant the airplanes were free for weekend
cross-country trips. Barbecues went along with almost all of our plane
washes. Throughout the year, we have had guest speakers at meetings. When our
Vice President resigned, a special election was held to let you decide who
the new VP should be. We participated in the 99’s spot landing contest and
the LI Air Show became a fundraiser for us. With a hurricane approaching,
many members turned out to move and secure a/c. Recently, we started having
club flyouts. The next mandate must be the updating of our fleet. I hope you
will give me the opportunity to continue as President and meet this
challenge. Ballots can be returned with your bill or you can vote in person
at the November meeting from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at which time the ballots will
be counted and the winner announced. Secretary’s Corner Rich Raine Our election time is here. Normally this occurs without much concern but this election
certainly has sparked great interest.
To make it fair to all we have enclosed your ballot, if you are a
voting member, in the statement along with this newsletter. Please send this ballot back to the office
with your preference for president.
If you prefer you may bring the ballot to the next meeting and hand it
to John Koch to be counted at the meeting.
If you are voting in person please be sure to bring the ballot
to the general meeting on Monday, November 24th, as there will only be the 86
votes counted. The original ballots
are the control for this number. Please let me know if you have any concerns or
suggestions that could make this group more responsive to YOU. You can email me by clicking here. Or send regular mail to the office. Phone calls are great too! 631-897-3030. |
