MEETINGS
The Board of Directors meetings
are on the second Monday of the month at 7:15PM. All members are welcome, however, please check with the president
first in order to get on the agenda.
General Membership meetings are the fourth Monday of the month at
7:00PM. There is no meeting this month.
THE
LEFT SEAT
by
Mark Hervan
Thank you to all who have truly
made my time as your President of GACE a very happy and fulfilling
experience.
Were it not for people like Dave Ferrera, who’s advice I would ask on a regular
basis, John Blosser for his knowledge on all things flying, Mark
Goodman
for keen wit and his work as Membership Director, Joe Leonard for his budget
conscience manner, Al Klug for those great columns, Ron Ushock for his anyplace
anytime work ethic, Bob Shellberg for all his work over the years, John (DSL)
Vahey for his insightful articles for the newsletter, Mike Geiger for putting
together the newsletter each month, John Koch for doing the billing each month,
Tony Monaco for fuel, John Costello as the all-around go-to guy and last but by
no means least Doug Weston, I could not have lasted as president for the last
five year. Over the years Doug has spent a tremendous amount his time and
expertise as the Admin. Director. Without Doug, our club would be mired in old
technology for scheduling and billing.
Its been great!!!
SECRETARY’S CORNER
by
Al Klug
As everyone is aware, along
with the bills in November were ballots for our annual club elections. Due to
the overwhelming support I received from the members, I will be moving into the
Presidents seat. For this, I say “Thank You” to all who voted. I will do my
best to fulfill your expectations. In
the race for Secretary, which ended up being somewhat close, Rich Raine edged out
James Weisberg. I’m sure that James
will still add to the dialogue at meetings.
For the months of December and
January, a great trip for the family is Longwood Gardens. Located at Kennett
Square, Pa. The nearest airport is
(ILG) New Castle County in Wilmington Delaware. A schedule of events can be
found at www.longwoodgardens.org
Examples include Holiday
Concerts at the Special Events Pavilion such as organ sing alongs, evening
concerts, performances by area choral groups handbell choirs and a harp
orchestra. There are also four cultural nights highlighting Kwanza, Chanuka,
Finland, and Wales, besides the beautiful
gardens, indoor and out. After
dark you will find fountains dancing to holiday music in the Open Air Theatre,
a carillon with 62 cast bells playing every ½ hour, a night blooming garden of
lights, and 400,000 tiny lights in the trees creating the illusion of snow.
In closing, I would like to
wish all the members and their families the Happiest Holidays ever and of
course, a prosperous New Year. I hope
to see you at the “Holiday Party” Dec. 13th and also at the
meetings, plane washes and other club events in 2003.
AIRPORT NEWS
According to the December 7
issue of Newsday, Long Island MacArthur Airport received approval from
the FAA for an expansion of Southwest Airlines terminal area. The airline will build an expansion of its
existing terminal area to allow up to 32 more flights per day. Also included will be a new parking area for
2,000 vehicles.
The FAA issued a “finding of no
significant impact” on the Environmental Impact Statement prepared for the
expansion.
Also, Brookhaven Calabro
Airport is planning obstruction removal, navaid, and security improvements. The
obstruction removal consists of the removal of 58 acres of woods and the
trimming of 23 acres.
The navaid improvements consist
of the removal and replacement of Runway End Identifier Lights on runways 15,
24, and 33; the installation of a Precision Approach Path Indicator on runways
15, 24, and 33; the removal of the Visual Approach Slope Indicators on runways
15 and 33; and the replacment of the directional locator, lighting windcone,
and segmented circle.
WHERE IS THIS?
This location might be off the
beaten path for most flyers. The lake
is located northwest of Albany, at the south end of the Adirondack
Mountains. It’s just north of
Johnstown, near Fulton County Airport (NY0) and is Great Sacandaga Lake. It is a great spot for sailing in the summer
as the lake is rather large, but shallow enough that it warms up enough to swim
in (for the intrepid souls).
